Course Architect - Stanley Thompson
The oldest nine at Saugeen Golf Club - Legacy - is the one that carries the trademark expertise of renowned Canadian architect Stanley Thompson.
Thompson grew up in Toronto, caddied in his youth and competed in amateur golf. But he went on from all that to design and renovate courses after serving in World War I. Between 1920 and 1953, he designed, remodeled or built more than 145 courses in Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and South America, including the Banff Springs Hotel Golf Course and Jasper Park Golf Course.
He was also a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Among architects whom he employed in his business were Robert Trent Jones Sr., Geoffrey Cornish, Howard Watson and Robbie Robinson - designers who went on to found their own distinguished firms.
Although for many years, he was not widely known outside of Canada, his fame has grown recently, and many now rank his work with that of Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast. He was elected to the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 1980 and there is a society that honors his work.
